Webinar: Explore New (Free) Tools for Processing Oral History Transcripts and Captions

Announcing a webinar (February 26, 1pm EST) that will be an introduction to new tools for working with oral history transcripts, including automatically adding timecode to human-generated transcripts

Webinar participants willl spend the hour exploring new (and free) tools recently developed and released by oral historian and archivist Doug Boyd to solve challenges and enhance workflows when working with oral history transcripts and captions. The webinar will discuss and demonstrate all of the following tools include a tutorial into the newly released Synchronifier LE, a JavaScript version of the Nunn Center’s Synchronifier, which is designed to automatically add timecode to human-generated transcripts that have been authenticated but lack timecode. Manually adding timecode can take hours, however, the Synchronifier LE will automaticallly add the timcode, saving your a LOT of time and money. The webinar will be recorded and distributed to those who register.

The tools we will explore in this webinar:

Transcript Accuracy Auditor: Evaluate and score the overall effectiveness of machine-generated transcripts by comparing them (at the word-level) to a corrected reference version of the same interview.

The Synchronifier LE: Designed to add time code to legacy transcripts that currently lack time-code synchronization.

The VTT Cue Combiner: Make a caption version of a VTT transcript (or SRT) transcript look and feel more like an oral history transcript and be more OHMS compliant by grouping subsequent speaker cues into paragraphs.

The Timecode Eraser: Removes timecode references (such as [HH:MM:SS], [HH:MM:SS:mm], (HH:MM:SS) from oral history transcripts, including any brackets or parentheses enclosing those timecodes.

The Caption Slicer: Take a human-edited transcript with timecode associated with speaker changes and convert this to more granular captions. Requires a WebVTT or SRT version of the same transcript (un-edited and granular cues).

This webinar is hosted via Zoom; however, you will receive your ticket information and links to the webinar through Eventbrite. You may be asked to set up a free Eventbrite account to access the webinar page and your personal “join now” link. Save your original Eventbrite email. The webinar is led by Dr. Doug Boyd, director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky Libraries. Boyd is an international expert on oral history, archives, and digital technologies, and is who envisioned, designed, and implemented OHMS, a free system to enhance access to online oral history.
