OHMS, WebVTT, and the Transcript Editor of my Dreams

We are excited to announce a major update to transcript functionality in OHMS Aviary! As detailed in my video announcement (watch here), the old transcript synchronization method (where a user drops time codes into a transcript at regular intervals) has been retired. This update introduces the new OHMS Aviary transcript standard, which allows for more granular and customizable timecode synchronization.

Join us on January 10, 2025, at 2:00 pm EST, for a brief introduction to the new OHMS Aviary transcription functionality.

Key Features of the New OHMS Aviary Transcript Standard:

  • Full Timecode Transcripts: Transcripts are divided into segments (or paragraphs) with timecodes marking the start and end of each segment.
  • Flexible Imports: Transcripts can be imported in various transcript and timecode formats.
  • Built-In Editor: Create and edit transcripts directly in OHMS Aviary without needing external tools.
  • Annotations: Add annotations to transcripts using the integrated annotation feature.
  • Export Options: Transcripts can be exported in several standard formats.
  • OHMS XML can be exported with transcripts for display in the updated OHMS Viewer.
  • Captioning: Use transcripts to generate accessible captions for external media players.

How to Add OHMS Aviary Transcripts:

  1. Import Supported Formats: Upload VTT, TXT, DOC, or DOCX transcripts that conform to the new standard.
  2. Legacy Conversion: Import TXT, DOC, or DOCX files using the OHMS legacy standard and convert them to the new format.
  3. Manual Creation: Create transcripts directly in OHMS Aviary with no external editing software required.
  4. Import OHMS XML Files with transcript data:
    • OHMS XML 6.0: Transcription data in <vtt_transcript> and <vtt_transcript_alt> fields.
    • OHMS XML 5.4: Transcription data in <sync>, <sync_alt>, <transcript>, and <transcript_alt> fields (converted to the new standard).

For detailed instructions and a complete overview of the new features, we encourage all users to review the OHMS Aviary Transcript Documentation.
